</p><p>Deng wuchs in <a href="Shenzhen" title="Shenzhen">Shenzhen</a> auf<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>, gewann 2006 eine Goldmedaille bei der <a href="Internationale_Mathematikolympiade" class="mw-redirect" title="Internationale Mathematikolympiade">Internationalen Mathematikolympiade</a>, und studierte zunächst an der <a href="Universit%C3%A4t_Peking" class="mw-redirect" title="Universität Peking">Universität Peking</a> um nach zwei Jahren an das <a href="Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology" title="Massachusetts Institute of Technology">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> zu wechseln. Er promovierte 2015 an der <a href="Universit%C3%A4t_Princeton" class="mw-redirect" title="Universität Princeton">Universität Princeton</a> bei Alexandru Ionescu und war danach bis 2018 am <a href="Courant_Institute" class="mw-redirect" title="Courant Institute">Courant Institute</a>. Danach war er Assistant Professor an der <a href="Universit%C3%A4t_von_S%C3%BCdkalifornien" class="mw-redirect" title="Universität von Südkalifornien">Universität von Südkalifornien</a>, wo er 2024 zum Professor befördert wurde, wenige Monate später aber an die <a href="Universit%C3%A4t_Chicago" class="mw-redirect" title="Universität Chicago">Universität Chicago</a> wechselte.

</p><p>Er arbeitet über nichtlineare Dispersions- und <a href="Wellengleichung" title="Wellengleichung">Wellengleichungen</a>, <a href="Fluiddynamik" title="Fluiddynamik">Fluiddynamik</a>, <a href="Harmonische_Analyse" title="Harmonische Analyse">harmonische Analyse</a>, <a href="Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie" title="Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie">Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie</a> partieller Differentialgleichungen und <a href="Statistische_Physik" title="Statistische Physik">statistische Physik</a>. Öffentlich bekannt<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> wurde er vor allem durch seine Beiträge zu <a href="Hilbertsche_Probleme" title="Hilbertsche Probleme">Hilberts sechstem Problem</a> über die axiomatische Herleitung der Gesetze der Physik, insbesondere den Beweis (mit Zaher Hani und Xiao Ma), dass die <a href="Boltzmann-Gleichung" title="Boltzmann-Gleichung">Boltzmann-Gleichung</a> aus den Newtonschen Gesetzen der Dynamik <a href="Modell_harter_Kugeln" title="Modell harter Kugeln">harter Kugeln</a> hergeleitet werden kann<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.

</p><p>Er erhielt den ICBS Frontiers of Science Award 2024, den MCA Prize 2025, die ICCM Gold Medal 2025, die Antonio Ambrosetti Medal 2025, den <a href="Oberwolfach-Preis" title="Oberwolfach-Preis">Oberwolfach-Preis</a> 2025 und den Leonard Eisenbud Prize 2026. Er ist eingeladener Sprecher auf dem <a href="Internationaler_Mathematikerkongress" title="Internationaler Mathematikerkongress">Internationalen Mathematikerkongress</a> 2026.
